Real Door County Wedding — Classic Romance

This is the type of wedding I would love to be invited to! You can tell Chris and Jen are so much in love, and the fun atmosphere and emotions were infectious.
Soft greens in the groomsmen paisley ties and the same soft tones in the hydrangea play nicely with the romantic white roses. The beautiful lace veil and soft ringlets in the Jen’s hair and the string quartet add to the romance during the ceremony. And the reception and after party look like it was truly magical with a live band, fireworks, and fun with family and friends – a classically romantic Door County wedding!
From the Bride … For years, my family has been visiting Door County to escape from the hustle and bustle of Chicago. After meeting Chris, I coulnd’t wait introduce him to one of my favorite places. We spent our first New Year’s Eve in Egg Harbor, and Chris quickly fell in love with Door County, too. After he proposed, he was the one to suggest that we get married in Door County – it was the perfect setting!
We knew that planning a wedding from a distance was going to be a challenge, but the vendors we worked with made the process seamless. After our first meeting with Carrie Baldwin from Door County Event Planners, we knew that we were sold on working with her to plan the reception at Horseshoe Bay Golf Club. Since we love the relaxed atmosphere that Door County offers, we wanted to keep the theme of relaxed elegance throughout the wedding weekend, and Carrie helped us achieve this perfectly.
Our guests joined us for a Welcome Party on Friday evening at the Horseshoe Bay Beach Club to kick off the celebration. The sunset created a beautiful backdrop for catching up with our family and friends – the cherry pie and s’mores were delicious, too!
On the big day, Kari Pudlo met us bright and early at my parents’ house to do the makeup and hair for the girls. My bridesmaids wore navy BCBG dresses. I wore a simple Lazaro satin gown with a pearl sash – my favorite detail – as well as my mom’s Priscilla of Boston veil. Kari stayed with us through the entire day, touching up makeup, providing tissues when necessary, and keeping me calm!
Our ceremony took place at Saint Joseph Catholic Church in Sturgeon Bay. Helene from Flora did the flower arrangements. She suggested the perfect range of flowers to offer texture to the bridesmaids’ bouquets and groomsmen’s boutonnieres. In between the ceremony and reception, the bridal party took photos around Egg Harbor while the guests enjoyed a cocktail reception at the Horseshoe Bay Beach Club. With the help of a bartender from back in Chicago, we created a signature drink, Peninsula Passion, with a cherry twist to highlight a signature flavor from Door County.
The reception at Horseshoe Bay Golf Club was lovely. Since we love to travel, we used different photos from our previous trips to serve as the table numbers. Instead of a traditional guestbook, we had postcards that guests filled out and placed in a vintage suitcase. Bill Fairchild made our cake – something that we could easily eat a slice of every day because of how delicious it is! After enjoying dinner and cake, we danced the night away. Chris Anderson from Fat Brass Band was fantastic to work with and compiled a set list that meshed our modern taste in music with our parents’ request for some classic oldies. My favorite memory about the band, however, was the selection of small instruments they supplied for the guests to play. I learned that I had a hidden talent as a cowbell player – it was so fun! The night ended with fireworks from Spielbauer Fireworks out of Green Bay. Oliver of Oliver Howell Photography, with help from Kelly Avenson, captured all of these special moments with beautiful images that we will cherish forever.
While the entire weekend was memorable, there are two highlights that I will never forget. The first was the cheese curds and mini brats that we had as late night munchies. To this day, that is still the most talked about memory from the wedding. The second was the weather. On Saturday it was hot and humid, with dark clouds looming in the sky. During dinner it poured rain, but left behind a beautiful rainbow. We have a fantastic picture with the rainbow and the golf course in the background – something that we could never have planned!
We ended the weekend with a casual brunch at my parents’ house, catered by Bruce from Alexander’s. We truly felt so grateful to have spent a weekend with our dearest family and friends in beautiful Door County!
