Door County Real Wedding — An Island Wedding

March 28th, 2012 by Morgan - 0 Comments - Leave a Comment

When you think “Island Wedding” spring or summer usually comes to mind, but in Door County Fall can be just as lovely a season to have your wedding on the island — Washington Island that is!

Located six miles off the tip of the Door County peninsula. The island is approximately 5 miles wide by 6 miles long and has a number of great locations for photos including popular Schoolhouse Beach with its water smoothed stones.

With all that ambiance, it’s not hard to see why it was chosen by Justin and Tiffany for their Door County wedding!

From the Bride … Most people don’t even know Wisconsin has an island, but we do! Washington Island is a very small island off the Door County Peninsula. You have to take a ferry over to the island, that just adds to the experience.

We picked Washington Island for our wedding day as we have sentimental ties to the island. My husband’s family has owned land on the island since the 1970′s. And once he started taking me there, it has become our special place to get away from it all. With the experience we and our guests had, it has made us fall deeper in love with the Washington Island community, its people and the businesses.

Justin and I were really set on having our wedding day be very special, and only include the most special people in our lives. We had our parents, our siblings, their children, along with our closest friends. We wanted something very intimate. We did have a full celebration including dinner and reception a month later in Madison.

We held a rehearsal dinner at KK Fiske, the food was delicious, the atmosphere was beautiful, the service was incredible. Anna outdid herself in decorating the outside tables with sunflowers and white tablecloths (without me asking). It really started the weekend on a perfect note.

My hair was done by Shear Heaven Hair Design by Kate Kaniff. Kate does beautiful work. Our ceremony was held at The Above and Beyond Cabin. Wonderful views overlooking the shore of Lake Michigan. It really was a perfect setting for a fall wedding.

We held a formal dinner at Nelson’s Hall. The hall was beautifully decorated (again without me asking), the service was spot on and the food amazing.

Our wedding cake by Creative Cakes owned by Bill Fairchild located in Baily’s Harbor. The cake was delicious and beautifully decorated.

We hired photographer Jason Mann with Jason Mann Photography out of Sturgeon Bay. He took beautiful pictures of us and our families, and really captured what we wanted for our wedding day pictures.

Justin and I did not have a wedding party, we wanted our day to be about us. We did take some family photos after the ceremony, but then we were off to take pictures all around the island with just the two of us. We went to some of our favorite places. School House Beach, the Large Tea Pot when you get off the ferry, the ferry dock itself. We also even had our pictures taken at the Washington Island Volunteer Fire Department (Justin is a Captain at the Cross Plains Volunteer Fire Department), so having that incorporated into our day was special to us.

Our wedding day was exactly what we wanted, no stress, lots of smiles and a lot of great memories.
